How to Use Area Rugs Effectively

Residential area rugs

Choosing an area rug for your home can add depth, color, and customization to your space.

Hardwood floors are great for resale value, versatility, and durability. But they are not exactly the coziest flooring for the areas of your home where you spend most of your time. Instead of just throwing area rugs down in the middle of your floors, here are some tips about how to choose a new area rug for your home and how to choose a place for it.

Design Scheme

One of the best parts of decorating your home is choosing new furnishing to go with your décor. Rugs can show off your personality and add some color to an otherwise bland room. They can be used to customize an apartment and to make your space your own. Use your new rug to your best advantage. If your room has lots of angles such as a protruding closet in a bedroom, a round or oval rug can make the room feel less severe with angles. If your room is a perfect rectangle, a similarly shaped rug will add length to the room.

If a rug is too large or small for a room, it can make the entire room feel off. For a large rug, make sure to leave at least 18 inches of bare space between the edge of the rug and the wall. To help choose the right size rug, make sure the rug either fits without extending under the furniture. If you want to a rug in your dining room, a good size rug will keep all of your chairs on it when they are pulled out.

General Traffic

One great use for rugs is in high traffic areas. These “runners” will keep your family and guests safe while walking from one end of the hall to the other. Hardwood floors can become slippery in high traffic areas, especially when it is wet outside, so putting runners down on the floor will keep water from tripping up your loved ones.

Legs On or Off

After picking out your rug, choosing your placement can be a difficult decision. Putting all four legs of your furniture on the rug can make the room feel more intimate, while putting just two legs on the rug can make your room feel airy and large. If you choose to bring in a rug for another pop of color, obstructing the colors with your furniture could be counterproductive. For this approach do not put any legs on your rug as it could ruin the effect.

Choosing a new look for your home can be as simple as adding a printed rug. A rug can add comfort, warmth, and intimacy to your space without the work of adding carpeting. For more information on choosing the right rug for you, speak with your Jim Boyd’s Flooring America experts!
