Caring for Your Carpet

Carpets trap allergens.

To keep your family safe from allergens, don’t forget to vacuum your carpets at least once a week!

Dirty shoes, kid stains, pet hair and dander, and food stains. These are just some of the things you carpet goes through each day. Carpets take this beating all while filtering allergens out of the air in your home. So why shouldn’t you take care of your flooring the way it does for your family? Here are some tips on how to care for your carpet.

Basic Maintenance

Vacuuming is one caring option that is not optional. It is the most important factor in caring for your carpet. The fibers in your carpet trap dirt and allergens but these fibers can become so full that is weighs them down and makes them look heavy, limp, and dull. To bring these fibers back to life, your most important tool is your vacuum. Vacuums will help get rid of the trapped dirt and will bring your fibers back to life. Experts agree that your carpet should be vacuumed at least once a week and more often for high traffic areas.

For Spills

Sometimes life happens. Whether that life is in the form of spaghetti sauce sitting your white carpet or red wine being pushed off by your mischievous dog, your carpet stains will need to be treated as soon as possible. The sooner spills are dealt with; the easier it will be to clean up the stain. First, blot up the liquid as much as possible with a paper towel or tissue. Do not add any cleaner or other liquid at this time. It will only make the stain set in and expand. When choosing a cleaning solution for the first time, you should always test it in an inconspicuous spot to make certain it will not make your carpet bleed it’s color. Assuming you have tested this solution many times, spray a little solution onto the stain and work from the outside in. Don’t rub the carpet too hard as it could damage the fibers. Dry the carpet with a fan if necessary.

When General Maintenance is Not Enough

It is important to remember that not all stains can be removed. Areas that have been bleached, faded in the sunlight, or if urine has been allowed to dry on your carpet, these stains cannot be removed. Stains from dyed drinks like Kool-Aid or grape soda are nearly impossible to remove. For any chance, they must be treated as soon as possible.
