The Carpet Guides: Types and Durability Factors

Carpets for your home

Choosing a carpet that works for your home and your family is a big decision. Know your facts before purchasing something you will regret later!

Shopping for any type of flooring can be a hard and confusing task. But it doesn’t have to be. This guide is to help you choose the best carpeting for your home. Let’s do it!

When looking at any flooring, you should be looking at its durability before anything else. Quality flooring can be quite expensive and is not a decision to make lightly. There are a few different aspects of durability you should be thinking about. The first is the thickness or density of the carpet. How close are the fiber stands of the carpet? The denser the carpet, the long it will stand up straight and be less “crushed.” But in some cases, a denser carpet isn’t as soft as less denser ones. The next things to think about is the way carpets are constructed as well as carpet fibers.

Type of Carpets

There are many different types and styles of carpets that all serve different purposes. You will want to choose a type of carpet that fits your wants and needs. One of the most common types of carpet is the Berber style. This carpet uses fibers that are looped instead of standing straight up. They can come in a solid color or in a multi-color. They are the most durable and do well with high traffic areas. However, these carpets are not plush and are not as comfortable as other carpet options. For a pet friendly option, look for a Berber in a “zipper lock” option, which prevents runs if your pet digs at the carpet. Other option is the plush textured carpet. This carpet is a stiffer type of solid color plush carpet. It does not show footprints or vacuum marks and it does tend to stay plusher longer than looser weave carpets. The plush Saxony carpet is softer, fluffier kind of carpet. It does tend to have a shine that makes it very attractive. Level cut loop style carpet is a cross between a Berber and a plush. Some fibers stand straight up while others loop over. This creates a pattern in the carpet some people find attractive. Frieze or California shag carpets are reminiscent of the 70’s but with an updated, modern look. It is the loosest type of carpet fibers and is definitely fluffy.
