Eco-Friendly Flooring Options: Carpeting

Environmentally Friendly Carpets

Manufacturers have become more environmentally friendly when making their carpets including switching from electricity to solar energy. Learn more about their green practices here!

For decades, carpeting was known for being the least environmentally friendly flooring option. Old carpeting materials were made with harsh chemicals and non-renewable resources like petroleum. This flooring also consumed a lot of energy to be produced and when they needed to be replaced, were thrown into landfills. But with recent advanced in technology, many carpets are now one of the most eco-friendly flooring options. But how are these new carpets different from their predecessors? Let’s take a look?

Manufacturing

Many manufacturers have started to change their practices to be more eco-friendly. The leading carpet manufacturers have turned to solar energy or have begun to reduce their water consumption. Many of the leading flooring manufactures, including Shaw and Mohawk, have implemented changed in order to become more environmentally friendly.

The Fibers

Over the past few decades, manufactures have found a way to use conventional and unconventional materials to make their carpets. One of the most notable unconventional materials is used in Mohawk’s Continuum Collection. This carpet collection uses up to 100 percent recycled plastic bottles. Companies using conventional materials are also turning to eco-friendly options instead of the synthetic fibers that were favored decades ago. Natural carpet fibers are typically made from renewable resources including wool and sisal fibers, which are harvested from plant leaves. These natural fibers are not as versatile as synthetic, so be sure to choose a fiber as appropriate to your lifestyle.

Landfill Friendly

Historically carpets have ended up in the landfills where they would sit indefinitely unable to biodegrade. But with these recent carpet upgrades, carpets can now be recycled into new carpeting materials. Although some carpets cannot be recycled back into carpets, these carpets can be made into other products and are referred to as “cradle-to-grave” recycling.
