Green Flooring Options: Cork

Cork flooring can add many different benefits to your home that other flooring can’t!

Chances are when you think of flooring options you do not think about cork. Cork isn’t just for preserving wine, holding memos, or papers in your classroom. This new flooring option is being praised for several different reasons. Let’s take a look at this green option and its benefits for your home!

What is Cork?

While there are many different sources for cork, most cork flooring comes from the bark of the cork oak tree that is native to the Mediterranean. This bark is harvested by hand every nine years in an effort to allow new bark to grow and regenerate. The bark is then dried for several months in the forest before being transported to a factory for manufacturing. This bark not only makes flooring but it is also the same bark that makes wine bottle corks. After the wine bottle corks are punched out of the bark, it is boiled and ground before being compressed into planks using an adhesive resin. The ground-up cork is then cut and used as final flooring or if a pattern is desired, pieces of shaved bark is used as a veneer with the ground-up material.

Aesthetically Pleasing

Unlike other flooring, cork flooring comes in a wide variety of styles that offer a range of designs. There are approximately 40 different colors and shapes that range from squares to hexagons for complete customization. These patterns in the cork can be made into different patterns or to mimic other materials such as granite, marble, or exotic wood grains.

Insulation

Cork flooring is a natural insulator in your home. For years, cork has been used for soundproofing rooms. This flooring material now helps to keep sound from transferring around the rooms and from being carried throughout your home. Unlike other hardwood flooring options, your feet won’t be cold touching cork flooring. Cork helps to keep your flooring the same temperature as the rest of your home, leaving it warm to the touch. It is also a cushion underfoot and helps to ease stress on your back and legs, making this the perfect material for kitchens, laundry rooms, and workshops.

Health and Durability

Cork is a beautiful flooring option for your home, but it is also a healthy option. It is naturally mold, mildew, and termite resistant and it is also anti-microbial. Cork flooring does not give off gas or shed microfibers that can impact your home’s air quality. If you are looking for a green flooring option that is not only safe for your home and is durable, look no further. This flooring is a safe, durable option for your home that can last more than 40 years.

Easy Occasional Maintenance

Cork flooring is easy to maintain. It is perfect for high-traffic areas of your home. The texture of the flooring and pattern of the material hides small scratches in the wood. Small dents in the floor fill themselves in because of the spongy material. To clean your floors, you will need to sweep and mop with a damp cloth in order to keep your floors looking their best. Cork flooring is a naturally water resistant material, but it is not waterproof. To help it maintain its waterproof property, you will need to refinish the flooring every few years.
