How To Choose Flooring You’ll Love

Flooring for your home

There are many things you should consider when choosing flooring for your home including design.

While you can find countless articles and tutorials on choosing the perfect wall color, arranging furniture, and space saving tips, flooring is often overlooked. However, the floor is one of the largest surfaces in any home, making flooring important when it comes to creating a look, feel, and atmosphere. Your budget, lifestyle, tastes, needs. and the amount of traffic in your home should be considered seriously when choosing a floor. Here are some tips to ensure you have the perfect flooring for your home.

Take Your Lifestyle Into Account

This is the most important thing to take into consideration when choosing flooring. Do you live alone? Do you have pets? Do you have a large family, very young children, or do you often like to host large events? For a busy home with lots of high traffic areas, plush carpeting is less than ideal. Perhaps consider wood, vinyl, or tile flooring for these well loved spaces. However, minimally trafficked areas are ideal for that luxurious plush carpeted feel.

Location, Location, Location

Flooring at the entrance of your home should have an impressive look, but also needs to be able to somewhat withstand outdoor elements. If your entry faces mud, sleet, and snow, consider using strong flooring material, such as slate, tile, or wood and an entry matt outside. Bedroom flooring should be comfortable for bare feet, and flooring in kitchens, laundry rooms, utility rooms, and bathrooms should be water resistant.

Know Your Budget

Flooring is priced per square foot and the overall costs can add up quickly. When looking at flooring, it is important to know a few things. Different flooring materials have different grades of quality. Synthetic carpet is cheaper up front than more plush and durable carpeting, but may require more expensive maintenance and replacement sooner than a higher grade carpet. Ceramic, slate, and marble tile are generally more expensive than carpet, but tile is incredibly low maintenance and rarely requires replacement. Wood and laminate flooring have become increasingly affordable over the years.
