3 Sustainable Hardwood Floors

Sustainable Hardwood Floors

What hardwood would you choose?

Homeowners everywhere are looking for something that is both beautiful for them home and sustainable for the environment. But how do you know you are choosing the best wood for your home? Let’s take a look at three sustainable hardwood floors you can have in your home.

White Ash

White ash has become a driving force of line-drives and a grand slam for American’s pastime since it was first discovered how hard this wood truly is. But white ash isn’t just hard, it is also sustainable. When this wood is kiln-dried, turned, and clear-coated, it becomes extremely hard and shock-resistant, making it the perfect floor. This wood grows throughout the eastern and central United States with a limited range found in southeastern Canada. It is harvested sustainably from Pennsylvania’s 2.2 million acres of FSC-certified forests. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ensures the wood is harvested in an environmentally-friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable manner without the concerns of deforestation.

Black Cherry

Black cherry is the only cherry tree that grows large enough to be used for commercial lumber. This wood is abundant and has similar qualities to mahogany. Black cheery was often used to make furniture in Colonial American and is still valued today for its lustrous glow that brings flooring, furniture, and cabinets to life. This wood is even used to make some Martin Guitars. Varieties of these trees grow throughout the eastern and central U.S. but most trees grow in the Allegheny Plateau of Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia in FSC-certified forests.

Maple

Maple can be found all around North America from Newfoundland to Miami and as far west as Minnesota. This wood is hard and comes in many different species from sugar maples to red and silver maples. These trees are sturdy but sustainable. It can also be polished and clear-coated to reveal a beautiful finish and imperfections. Maples are one of the most abundant trees found in eastern North America and even adorns the Canadian flag.
