What kind of hardwood finish is right for you?

Hardwood flooring is full of decisions, but they all only allow you to further customize your flooring. One important choice you’ll make during the process is the hardwood finish you want. Each different option has its benefits, and your decision should rely on the look you want to achieve and the level of functionality you need. Choosing a finish for your hardwood is fairly straightforward, but it’s important to check out all of the options in order to end up with the perfect hardwood flooring for you and your home.

The Options

There are four main types of options when it comes to finishes for your hardwood. You’ll choose between matte, satin, semi-gloss, and glossy. Glossy finishing is a rare choice for homes, as the sheer amount of light reflected makes it nearly impossible to keep clean. You and your guests will see every footprint and every spec of dust that hits the floor. This type of flooring is reserved for places like gyms and event halls, where a whole staff of people can work to maintain the high level of cleaning that is necessary. Let’s look at the other three options

Matte flooring is becoming more and more popular among homeowners. This is likely due to the fact that it is the easiest type of finishing to keep clean. With any hardwood flooring, scratches are a possibility. Matte flooring shows the least amount of wear. Things like dust, scratches, and footprints are easily hidden, giving the appearance of a healthy hardwood floor.

Satin finishing is the most popular option on the market because it is a great middle-of-the-road option between matte and semi-gloss. You’ll still be able to hide unsightly scratches and dust, but a very slight glossy finish will keep your home looking classy. Satin finish does a great job of highlighting and elevating any species of wood.

Semi-gloss finishing is perfect for people who love a little shine in their home. Aside from full on glossy floors, semi-gloss is one of the most reflective finish options, and it is great in areas that don’t have particularly high traffic like dining rooms. You may not want to risk using semi-gloss flooring in rooms like the kitchen, as it will be prone to scratching and wear, but it can elevate the class and appeal of so many areas of your home.
