Should You Choose Carpet or Hardwood Flooring?

Flooring Options

Choosing a type of flooring can be hard, but there are many things you need to consider before committing to one type.

We have all heard this debate go back and forth: which flooring is better. But both of these flooring options have pros and cons that consumers should consider before settling on one or the other.

Carpeting: Pros and Cons

Carpeting has been the choice of homeowners since the Neolithic Era around 7,000 B.C. While they did not have wall-to-wall modern day carpeting, they did have woven rugs that covered the floors. Unlike hardwood floors, carpet provides a type of insulation to the home. It also dampens the sound which can make the room feel more intimate. Carpets come in different styles, colors, and patterns for every taste. Carpeting is also considered safer because it can cushion falls.

Unfortunately, carpets not only trap heat but allergens as well. This flooring acts as an air filter, capturing dust, pet hair, pollen, and dirt into the weave of the carpet. If your family suffers from respiratory problems like asthma, the carpets must be kept clean with weekly maintenance. Carpet does not add or deter value in a home that is being sold. Carpets are easily changed in a new house, so buyers can look at the carpets as a way to put their own touches into their new home.

Hardwood Flooring

For most interior designers, hardwood floors are the key elements to designing a modern space. Hardwood floors are visually appealing, easy to maintain, and can add resale value to homes. Wood can make small rooms feel more spacious and goes with a variety of aesthetics. On average, hardwood floors last three times as long as carpets and can last longer with care and maintenance.

Unfortunately, hardwood floors does not muffle sounds. The sound does not get trapped in the wood and can echo back around the room. It also does not insulate houses. The maintenance of hardwood floors can be easy but must be done on a regular schedule in order to keep dirt away. Floors must be swept and mopped in order to keep them clean. Hardwood floors can also obtain scratches from everyday use, pets, and furniture. These can be helped by indoor area rugs and general cleaning as well as harder maintenance.

The choice of which flooring is better falls onto the people living in the home. If you are looking for a quiet, cozy environment, you are looking for carpeting. But if you are looking for something with resale value and will match all of your moods, hardwood might be the flooring for you.
