Questions to Ask Before Installing Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors

What questions should you ask before falling in love with your hardwood floors?

Now that you have chosen to increase your home’s value and transform your home with beautiful new hardwood flooring, the hard work might feel like it is over. However, hardwood floor installation is slightly more complicated than simply picking a wood and hiring a contractor. Here are some of the questions you should ask before installing your new hardwood floors to ensure that the process is as smooth and painless as possible.

Where Exactly Will the Hardwood Flooring Go?

The location of your hardwood flooring installation can change what types of flooring are available to you. Whether or not you realize it, installation on the second floor of your home is completely different from hardwood floor installation in your basement. All floors below ground level are known as below grade. The main floor of your home, or, the floor that is even with the outside ground is known as on grade. Floors that are above the outside ground level are (you guessed it) above grade. One example of installation changes due to grade is with solid hardwood flooring. Sold hardwood flooring should never be installed on floors that are below grade, as moisture from the ground can lead to rotting or insect infestation. The same solid hardwood, however, could be the perfect option for above grade flooring.

What Type of Subflooring Do You Have?

The type of subflooring on each level of your home will also affect what type of wood is best for your hardwood flooring. The most common types of subflooring are concrete, plywood, and particleboard. If you have a concrete subfloor, engineered wood is the best option for you. Plywood is the most widely used type of subflooring, and it provides the homeowner with the most options in terms of hardwood flooring. Particleboard is not as common in new homes and will need to be updated and replaced with plywood in order to properly install hardwood flooring.

How Do You Use Your Home?

It might sound like a silly question, but how you use your home will change what type of hardwood flooring is best for your family. Do you have children or pets that roam around your hardwood flooring? Do you entertain frequently and host many large gatherings? If you have many high-traffic areas in your home, harder wood is a better option.
