The Janka Hardness Test

Janka Hardwood Floors

When choosing hardwood floors, make sure you know what the Janka rating is!

When thinking about hardwood floor for your home or office, it is important for you to choose one that can stand up to the activities of your space. From high heeled shoes to rough-housing children, all flooring will need to stand up to your life. But how can you tell what hardwood floor is right for your home? By using the Janka Hardness Test. The Janka Hardness Test can help you find the right hardwood floor for your home. But what is the Janka Hardness Test? Let’s take a look.

The Janka Hardness Test

The Janka Hardness Test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and general wear. This test is done with a steel ball and a plank of wood. The steel ball is pressed into the top and the side of the plank of wood. Since wood hardness varies depending on the direction of the wood grain, both the side and the top of the wood. The steel ball is pressed into the wood with an increasing amount of force until the ball is embedded halfway into the wood. The amount of force required to embed the ball into the wood is the Janka Hardness Score.

Why Does the Janka Hardness Test Matter?

The Janka Hardness Test is an important tool for anyone who wants to install hardwood in their home. This test will help you determine if your flooring choices can stand up to the pressure of living in your home or commercial space. A softer wood is more susceptible to dents than harder woods. If you or the people in your home or office tend to wear heels or even hard-soled shoes in the space, you should consider a floor that is hard in order to avoid indentations. Aim for a wood species that has a Janka rating of 1300 or more. This could mean decking for your floor with American Beech wood, which is rated at 1300, or Brazilian Walnut, which is the hardest wood rated at 3684.
