Hardwood floors come in a variety of wood species, colors and widths. It is easy to get confused. At Jim Boyd’s Flooring America we can help you with all your room design ideas, including the selection process so you can get exactly the right wood floor for your home.

If you are considering hardwood floors installation in your home, it is important to determine what type of wood floor will best suit your needs, solid hardwood or engineered hardwood. While both of these products are real wood they are surprisingly different from one another.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Floors are real wood produced using multiple layers of wood veneers.  Each layer is stacked in a cross-grain configuration making it dimensionally stable.  This means engineered wood flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity.  Engineered wood floors can be nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor or glued down to a wood subfloor or concrete slab.  Because of this they are ideal for slab or basement flooring  installations but can be used in any room in the house.  Many condominium developments are built with concrete slabs.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid Hardwood Flooring is a solid piece of wood from top to bottom. The thickness of solid wood flooring can vary greatly, but generally ranges from 3⁄4” to 5/16”. Solid hardwood can be used in any room that is above grade including family/living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and even kitchens.

To keep your hardwood floors looking their best we recommend using a humidifier on your furnace to keep humidity levels at 40% or higher in the winter. This will keep the wood from shrinking and creating gaps in the planks.

Our pre-finished solid and engineered hardwoods have an aluminum oxide finish which is very durable and scratch resistant to protect your hardwood floors from everyday wear and tear. We understand that hardwood flooring is a big investment. The aluminum oxide finish with protect your investment for many years to come.

All of the hardwood flooring we sell is in accordance with the Lacey Act which is significant because it protects our forests and eliminates the influx of low-cost, low quality flooring produced from illegally harvested wood. In addition all of our hardwood floor products are formaldehyde free.

The 2014-15 design trends for hardwood include:

  • Wide planks from 7”to 9” especially suited for large open areas.
  • Random plank designs add visual interest to small areas.
  • Satin finishes are becoming more popular than high-gloss.  Lower gloss finishes hide dust and other imperfections.
  • Weathered-looks, limed woods and gray-toned woods are particularly popular.  Black and brown toned woods are subsiding in popularity.
