The Importance of Carpet Padding

Any carpet installation should start with quality carpet padding. Carpet padding is the foundation of any good carpet. Without good padding, it doesn’t matter what type of carpet you put down; it will not be comfortable. Carpet padding (carpet Cushion) density and carpet padding thickness each contribute to carpet performance. So when you are budgeting for a new carpet, make sure you take into account the price of a quality padding.

This article from The Carpet Buyer’s Handbook explains the importance of carpet padding.

Yes, carpet padding plays a pivotal role in carpet comfort, but its main purpose is actually to absorb impact that the carpet would otherwise be subjected to. This greatly increases the lifespan of your carpet. Conversely, cheap carpet padding will negatively affect the lifespan of your carpet.

For this reason, it is important to pick a dense carpet padding that can withstand constant foot traffic. Many consumers make the mistake of purchasing padding that is overly soft, expecting it will provide a better feel to their carpets. Instead, they have unintentionally shortened the lifespan of their carpet. Carpet cushion that is too soft, bottoms out when exposed to foot traffic. This allows the carpet to assume the rest of the impact burden; thus shortening carpet performance life.

What truly makes selecting the proper padding difficult is that there is no one rating system for padding. There are numerous testing methods for carpet cushion density, including: indentation load deflection (ILD), indentation force deflection (IFD), compression load deflection (CLD), and compression force deflection (CFD). Some of these methods use a square inch as the area for evaluation, while others use a broader are such as 6 or 8 square inches, making it increasingly difficult to compare padding.

Also, carpet cushion may be rated in weight per cubic yard. An 8-pound carpet cushion may weigh 8 pounds in a standard 3 ft by 3 ft by 3-ft cube. A flat rubber carpet padding may weigh 22 pounds per cubic foot and a prime urethane carpet cushion may weigh only 4 pounds, but the ultimate performance factor is how many pounds per footfall area will it take for the carpet cushion to bottom out.

So the only way to truly find out what carpet padding will work best for you is to ask questions. Ask a salesperson at the carpet store, ask several carpet installation companies and anyone else you may be able to find. Then do some research yourself and pick out the padding that you think best fits your needs.
